Columbia Academy Ignites Passion for Reading with Staff-Student Book Talks
Columbia Academy (CA) took an innovative approach to refresh a passion for reading in students and to strengthen the culture of literacy through a staff book talk with a group of the school’s students.
CA Teacher Matt Birr, was the first staff members to talk with students about the book “The Crossover” by Kwame Alexander. The large group of students gathered during their lunch hour to discuss the book and left with a copy to read. In a few weeks – once students have had a chance to read the book on their own – Birr will hold a follow-up talk about their thoughts on the book.
“It was amazing to see students excited about reading a book!” said CA Literacy Coach Tanya Heifort. “Students were so happy to get a copy of the book and are looking forward to meeting up with Mr. Birr in a few weeks to talk with him about [it]!”
