Fourteen Advance to State History Day Competition
Columbia Academy announces that 14 seventh- and eighth-grade students, defending seven projects, have advanced from the Regional History Day Junior Division to the State competition next month. Additionally, four students earned Honorable Mention at the Regional competition. Advancing to State are the following teams (including the titles of their presentations):
- Lidya Kennedy and Anoosha Ali (Angola: The Fight to Rule)
- Sophie Kuether and Naciima Mohamed (Homosexuals in Concentration Camps: The Pink)
- Heaven Gg and Danquyen Le (The Chinese Exclusion Act)
- Catherine Loper and Ellie Zeimet (The LPGA: The Pioneers in Women's Sports)
- Amara Thompson and Natalie Miska (The Right to Freedom of Speech)
- Liza Milevskaya and Molly Gross (The Salem Witch Trials: The Devils Last Trial)
- Aaliyah Dumoulin and Simone Lyght (Philadelphia State Hospital)
Earning Honorable Mentions are Yuli Cordova and Kwot Anwey (The Black 14: Paving the Way for Protests) and Matt Rockwell and Ji Qi Ni (Coal Strike of 1902). A total of 37 students, including Honors and Pre-Advanced Placement students, qualified for the Regional competition.
National History Day is an inter-disciplinary research project where students choose a topic that relates to this year's theme (Conflict and Compromise), research that topic and present in one of five presentation categories (Research Paper, Exhibit, Documentary, Performances or Website).
The State competition will be held starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 28 at the Coffman Memorial Union, University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus. The Columbia Academy team is coached by teachers Chris Mason, Hannah Student and Maureen Reilly. Mason said the competition helps "build deep research skills, critical analysis of an historical event and team-building."
