Columbia Heights High School Theater Program Presents Two Christopher Durang One-Act Plays
The Columbia Heights High School (CHHS) Theater Department is presenting “An Evening with Christopher Durang: The Actor’s Nightmare and For Whom the Southern Belle Tolls.” The free one-act plays are scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26 and Saturday, Jan. 27 and 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28, all at the CHHS Performing Arts Center (1400 49th Ave. NE, Columbia Heights).
Director Shelley Roberts Gyllen says the public is welcome for an “hour of laughter and parody in two of Christopher Durang’s hilarious one act plays.” She says The Actor’s Nightmare “hilariously addresses every actor’s worst dream— having to perform when you don’t know any of the lines,” She added For Whom the Southern Belle Tolls is a parody of Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie. “Durang throws his characters under a harsh lens that pulls out both the absurdity of the characters and the reasons we can’t help but like them,” she says.
Durang is an American playwright known for works of outrageous and often absurd comedy. His work was especially popular in the 1980s. His play “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” won the Tony Award for Best Play in 2013. Durang was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Drama (2006) for “Miss Witherspoon.” He is a member of the American Theater Hall of Fame.
