Important Message from Columbia Heights Public Schools | Mensaje Importante de las Escuelas Públicas de Columbia Heights
Dear Columbia Heights Public Schools Community,
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Mr. George Floyd, a Black man who was killed by Minneapolis police. The killing of Mr. Floyd and the systems of racism that it represents has brought about a strong public outcry for justice and for change in the inequities that plague our communities. The feelings of pain, anger, frustration, and fear are understandable. As a school community who is committed to supporting the full and rich development of all our children, we resolve to strengthen our work on issues of equity in the classroom, larger society, and in social and economic systems.
All of this is happening as we concluded the school year and the springtime of distance learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic. During this time when we aren’t able to be together physically, we have learned how to build community through other means and with a variety of resources. The communities of the classroom, school and district are the fabric that weaves us together in mutual care and support. Especially during this most tragic and upsetting time, the District is still here to listen to our students and families for how we can better show up with authentic humility and love in relationship with each other. We know that it is particularly traumatizing and confusing for the children. Families seeking direct support may contact Director of Special Education Dr. John Fry at 763-528-4540 or FryJ@colheights.k12.mn.us. We are also providing a link with a list of some resources (mental health, crisis support, food, housing and more) to support our children and families.
We are committed to providing a safe and caring educational environment where our students, families and staff are valued, respected and honored in their full humanity. As a District, we are resolved to listen and learn with humility, to interrupt and address injustice, and to build understanding and empathy in our community and society. May the tragic death of Mr. Floyd and the subsequent community response be the catalyst for us to learn how to be in more respectful and compassionate relationship with each other.
Sincerely,
Kathy L. Kelly
Sinceramente,
Kathy L. Kelly
