Back-to-School Plan
Columbia Heights Public Schools (CHPS) has put together learning scenarios for Fall 2020 in response to guidance from the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE), Department of Health and Executive Order 20-82.
After reviewing Anoka County data, adjacent counties’ data, along with COVID-19 data specific to Columbia Heights, Hilltop and Fridley, reviewing family and staff survey results, focus groups and lengthy consultation with its leadership, District Administration recommends a four-phase approach to the 2020-2021 school year.
PHASE ONE: Heights from Home
Students receive instruction through an improved version of distance learning.
PHASE TWO: Modified Hybrid
Students will continue learning via Heights from Home with small groups of identified students learning on site on specified days based on student need and staffing considerations. Students with special needs, English learners, our youngest learners and seniors may be considered for on-site learning in this phase based on state guidance.
PHASE THREE: Full Hybrid
Students would receive instruction both in person and from home. This schedule would be intended for all students unless their family has opted for Heights from Home only.*
PHASE FOUR: On-Site Learning
All students and staff back in school, unless their family has opted for Heights from Home only.*
In the coming days, families will be surveyed to help inform the District on transportation needs, staffing and child care, how to best plan for those families who will choose the Heights from Home only scenario, and more. Communication about this survey will be sent out in multiple ways.
Staff was asked to notify the Human Resources Department if they qualify to work from home based on the guidance from MDE.
The health and safety of students, staff and families is a top priority. Based on all of the gathered data, current circumstances and trend data, District Administration recommends CHPS begin the school year in phase two, the Modified Hybrid model. The learning scenario could change based on how COVID-19 spreads.
*Regardless of the phase and scenario, families have the opportunity to choose Heights from Home only. Families need to commit to this model a quarter at a time.
