The public is invited to the Columbia Heights High School Drama Department Spring Musical “Little Shop of Horrors." Performances are scheduled for 7 p.m. April 21, 22, 23, 27, 28 and 29 at the CHHS Performing Arts Center, 1400 49th Avenue NE, Columbia Heights. Cost to attend is $3 for students and senior citizens and $6 for adults. Tickets will be available at the door.
The high school musical adaption of "Little Shop of Horrors" is based on the 1986 American rock musical horror comedy film - and the earlier 1960 original movie - and off-Broadway musical comedy. The show is about a nerd florist shop worker who raises a vicious, raunchy plant that feeds on human blood.
The Columbia Heights Drama Program received 14 State Spotlight Awards last year for their production of "Grease." The production earned an Honorable Mention for Overall Performance and senior Jesse Mickelson (pictured as Seymour in Little Shop of Horrors) was named Outstanding Actor in a Supporting Role. The high school program has been a consistent Spotlight award recipient over the years.
The musical is directed by Farrah Buffington with a student cast of 17 supported by a crew of 10. Buffington has more than 11 years of directing experience and her musicals have won numerous Spotlight awards. She is also a member of Siege Perilous Films, which has participated in the Minnesota Fringe Festival. Buffington is also a board member for the Little Lifebooks Theater in Minneapolis.
This musical theatre production is proud to be part of Spotlight Education, a program of Hennepin Theatre Trust. Through Spotlight Education students across Minnesota involved in their high school musical theatre programs receive professional training and guidance to enhance their artistic, technical and performing skills. Involvement in the arts helps to foster collaboration, critical thinking and self-expression and empower the next generation of leaders.
