Section 504

Help When Life Activities are Substantially Limited

Columbia Heights Public Schools complies with the requirements of Section 504 of the Human Rights Act and are committed to providing accommodations for students in our schools. The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Fact Sheets provide information on protections against discrimination because of a disability and the right to appropriate accommodations.

Who Qualifies for Section 504?

A person is "disabled" according to Section 504 if he/she has a mental or physical impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities. That person must be unable to perform, or be significantly limited in the ability to perform, an activity when compared to an average person in the general population.

Learning is a Major Life Activity

When a condition significantly limits a major life activity, an accommodation plan must be developed for that person. Accommodations or services are determined by a team knowledgeable about the individual and his/her disability.  Major life activities include functions such as: caring for oneself, performing manual tasks, walking, seeing, hearing, speaking, learning, breathing, and working.

Requesting

Parents or students may request accommodations under the protections of this law by contacting Kate Kruse, Student Services Administrative Assistant, at 763-528-4414.
