Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE)

What is ECFE?

Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) is a program for parents and their children. Recognizing that parents are their child's first and most important teachers, ECFE promotes interaction between parents and children and offers parenting support.

Who can attend ECFE classes?

All families with children birth to five years old are welcome to attend classes. Families may join classes during the year, as space permits. Children must be the appropriate age by Sept. 1. Most classes meet once per week.

For parents and children
A portion of each class is devoted to interactive activities planned by a licensed Early Childhood Educator. This is a time for parents and children to explore a variety of educational activities together along with learning new songs, finger plays, and stories. We encourage parents to follow their child’s lead.

For children
For the other portion of each class, children have fun learning together through play. With the guidance of a licensed Early Childhood Educator and Assistant, children engage in art, music and movement, games and activities. We provide safety and security for children to thrive.

For parents
During parent discussions, parents separate from their children and move to another room with a licensed Parent Educator. This is a comfortable environment for parents to talk about the joys and challenges of being a parent. The Parent Educator leads discussions focusing on the interests of each group related to child development and guidance. The Parent Educator helps parents to problem-solve and provides strategies and tools for parents to use.

ECFE classes are at the Family Center, 1460 49th Avenue NE, Columbia Heights.

Fees
ECFE class fees are on a sliding fee scale based on gross annual income. No one is turned away for inability to pay.
