    Reports from Members of the Board

    Chair Naty Severson had conversations with parents and community members. She also attended the May 19 School Board Work Session and a School Board Chair meeting.

    Vice Chair Lorien Mueller had conversations with parents and community members and attended the May 19 School Board Work Session. She also attending a School Board Chair meeting.

    Clerk Molly Lewis had conversations with parents and community members. She also had a conversation with the Superintendent.

    Treasurer Laura Palmer attended the May 19 School Board Work Session.

    Director Hala Asamarai had conversations with parents and community members.

    Director John Larkin had conversations with parents and community members and attended the May 19 School Board Work Session.

    Superintendent's Report
    Superintendent Kathy L. Kelly attended a Minnesota School Board Association WebEx meeting about graduation ceremonies and possible liabilities. She received multiple pandemic updates from the State Commissioners of Education and Health regarding guidance on graduation and summer programming. Kelly attended a Superintendents Licensure panel for a CHPS employee who successfully completed their licensure. She met with the City of Columbia Heights City Manager, Police and Fire Chiefs regrading graduation plans, as well as a meeting with two School Board members, the Police and Fire Chiefs and Director of Technology, Security & Building Operations Bryan Hennekens regarding planning. The Superintendent also met with the school district's attorney, insurance risk manager and worker's comp regarding graduation ceremony liabilities. Kelly was i
    n contact with multiple School Board members regarding concerns. She also attended the May 19 School Board Work Session and a School Board Chair meeting.

    Employee of the Year
    Director of Human Resources Lindsey Bennett introduced Columbia Heights High School Assistant Principal Matt Miller for recognition as the 2019-2020 Employee of the year.

    Everfi
    Director of Teaching & Learning Tara Thukral, along with Sue Sjoselius, Michael School and Andrea Murphy of Northeast Bank presented information on Everfi, a financial literacy online course. Northeast Bank financially supports Everfi which is used in Columbia Heights High School’s business courses. Members from Northeast Bank will join the virtual meeting to hear about the use of Everfi at CHHS and provide information on their donation. View the presentation.

    OPEB Trust
    Director of Finance & Operations Denise Sundstrom and Merle Waters of Wells Fargo presented an update on the OPEB Trust held by Wells Fargo.

    Adult Basic Education (ABE)
    Director of Community Education & Communications Kristen Stuenkel and ABE Program Supervisor Kathleen Moriarty presented information about the Metro North ABE Program that exists under the District's Community Education Department. They shared information about the variety of programs and classes offered at the 4111 Central Ave. NE location, serving students predominately from the CHPS and Fridley Public Schools area.     Technology, Security Services and Building Operations Department Update
    Director of Technology, Security and Building Operations Bryan Hennekens presented an updated on the roles and responsibilities of his department.

    Comprehensive Arts Program Plan (CAPP)
    Executive Director of Educational Services Zena Stenvik, Valley View Teacher Alison Thompson and high school teacher Hannah Starke presented information on the Columbia Heights Public Schools Comprehensive Arts Program Three-year Plan, which includes 4 Strategic Directions along with action steps and budgetary considerations. Columbia Heights Public Schools was selected to participate in the MN Comprehensive Arts Planning Program. Minnesota’s Comprehensive Arts Planning Program (CAPP) provides assistance to selected public school districts as they design three-year, strategic plans for K-12 arts education programs. CAPP provides financial and technical assistance to support the strategic planning process through workshops, site visits, leadership training, and resource materials. During the 2019-2020 school year all of the Columbia Heights arts teachers were trained on the CAPP model, and gave input on the creation of a three-year plan.

    Out of State and Overnight Field Trips
    Director of Teaching & Learning Tara Thukral and CHHS Principal Dan Wrobleski provided an update on the 2021 New York City Study Seminar Trip. This study seminar has already been approved by the School Board. Updates were provided on fundraising as well as travel considering COVID-19. View the presentation.


    Action Items

    2020-2021 Budget
    The Board approved 2020-2021 Preliminary Budget reviews at the May 12 meeting.

    Revised Long Term Facility Maintenance 2019-2020
    The Board approved a revised 10-year, long-term facilities maintenance plan. 

    Sustainability Project
    The Board approved entering into an agreement with Waste to Energy Canada (WTEC) on the sustainability project previously presented.

    Graduation Plan
    The Board reviewed two options for the CHHS class of 2020 graduation ceremony in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The two proposed options were developed following the Minnesota Department of Education and Minnesota Department of Health graduation guidance subject to the Governor's Executive Order. The Board approved option 2 for having a recorded graduation ceremony.

    BoardBook Premier Subscription Agreement
    The Board approved replacing BoardBook Classic (which will be retired by the company) with the Premier version. 

    National School Board Association (NSBA) Membership Renewal
    The Board approved the renewal of its NSBA membership.
