Dec. 18, 2018 School Board Meeting

  • Acknowledgement of Contributions

    Chair John Larkin announced a resolution to accept current contributions in the amount of $10,609. The School Board accepts with appreciation the contributions of these gifts and donations.


    Reports from Members of the Board

    Chair John Larkin attended the CHHS play, a CH Business Council meeting, a basketball game, volunteered at a basketball tournament, and had conversations with community members.

    Vice Chair Naty Severson was not present.

    Treasurer Lorien Mueller attended a basketball game, volunteered at a basketball tournament, attended a dance team performance, a pep band performance, a Silver Lake Symphonic Winds concert, had a conversation with Director Bennett and Director Stenvik, and had conversations with community members.

    Clerk Hala Asamarai attended the CHPS Policy Subcommittee.

    Director Molly Lewis attended basketball games.

    Director Laura Palmer attended the CHPS Policy Subcommittee, had a meeting with Representative Kunesh-Podein, attended the MSBA Delegate Assembly, and a 916 Board meeting.


    Superintendent's Report

    Superintendent Kathy Kelly attended the AMSD Annual Conference, the AMSD December meeting, the North Suburban Post-Secondary Success Consortium meeting, an Intermediate District 916 School Safety meeting with Director Hennekens. She also attended the December planning meeting of the New York City Study Seminar, Highland Elementary Winter Sing Concert and Caroling at Crest View Senior Community, the retirement celebration of Walt Fehst, the construction oversight committee meeting, PreK - Grade 12 PLC meeting, the CHPS Policy Subcommittee and the School Board Chair meeting prior to the Board meeting.

    CHHS Pres Building Vision Card -- Columbia Heights High School
    Executive Director of Educational Services Zena Stenvik, CHHS Principal Dan Wrobleski, and CHHS students Zeinab Mohamud and Amir Davis presented information on the Vision Card for Columbia Heights High School that tie to the District Strategic Plan.     District's Annual Budget Hearing (Truth in Taxation Hearing)

    Director of Finance and Operations Bernice Humnick provided information for the District’s Annual Budget Hearing (Truth in Taxation Hearing).


    Action Items 

    Pay 2018 Levy
    Director of Finance and Operations Bernice Humnick requested approval of the Pay 2019 Levy as presented. The Pay 2019 Levy was approved. View the presentation.

    Sale of 2019A Bond Resolution
    Director of Finance and Operations Bernice Humnick and Kelly Smith with Springstead Inc. requested approval of a Bond resolution authorizing the Bond sale (2019A). The Sale of 2019A Bond was approved.

    Sale of 2019B Bond Resolution
    Director of Finance and Operations Bernice Humnick and Kelly Smith with Springstead Inc. requested approval of a Bond resolution authorizing the Bond sale (2019B). The Sale of 2019B Bond was approved.

    Police Liaison Contract Approval
    Director of Finance and Operations Bernice Humnick requested approval of the Police Liaison Contract. The Police Liaison Contract was approved.

    Transportation Bids
    Director of Finance and Operations Bernice Humnick requested approval to solicit bids for transportation. The request to solicit bids for transportation was approved.

    Program and Grade Level Closing
    Superintendent Kathy Kelly requested approval of closing to open enrollment Grade 5 at Highland and Valley View Elementary Schools and the LEAP program at Highland Elementary School. The closing to open enrollment of Grade 5 at Highland and Valley View Elementary Schools and the LEAP program at Highland Elementary School was approved. 

    Resolution to Combine Precincts for Special Elections
    Election Clerk Dawn Hoium requested the approval of a resolution to combine precincts for Special Elections. The resolution to combine precincts for Special Elections was approved.

    Board Policies -- Second Reading
    The School Board approved the following policies: 506- Student Discipline; 509- Enrollment of Non-Resident Students; 525- Violence Prevention (Applicable to students and staff); 530- Immunization Requirements; 802- Disposition of Obsolete Equipment and Materials.

    Letter to City Council
    Chair John Larkin requested the approval of a letter to the City Council regarding Liaisons. The letter to the City Council regarding Liaisons was approved.


    Board Topics 

    Member Lorien Mueller clarified that the Ad Hoc Committee on Community Engagement is currently open participation by board members but for the public.

    Chair John Larkin reminded members about the SACA Polar Plunge in January.
