Nov. 13, 2018 School Board Meeting

    Chair John Larkin attended the CHHS Alumni Scholarship Foundation dinner, high school conferences and the School Board chair meeting.

    Vice Chair Naty Severson attended the CHHS Alumni Scholarship Foundation dinner, the School Board chair meeting, the sub-committee on policy meeting and had conversations with community members.

    Treasurer Lorien Mueller had conversations with community members, attended the JV swimming meet and football sections game. Mueller also attended high school conferences and met with Superintendent Kelly.

    Clerk Hala Asamarai was not present.

    Director Molly Lewis had conversations with community members, attended Strikers adapted soccer games, the CHHS Alumni Scholarship Foundation dinner and school conferences.

    Director Laura Palmer attended the 916 Board meeting and the sub-committee on policy meeting.


    Superintendent's Report

    Superintendent Kathy Kelly attended the College Board national forum and provided an update on the District involvement and implementation of College Board programming and curriculum. The Superintendent also attended the CHHS Alumni Scholarship Foundation dinner and Strikers adapted soccer games. She attended the 2018 MNSHAPE Awards with CA Principal Duane Berkas where CA PE Teacher Brad Boleman was recognized as Middle School PE Teacher of the Year. The Superintendent also met with various School Board members.


    Tenured 18 Reports and Information Items

    Tenured Teacher Recognition 
    Director of Human Resources Lindesy Bennet, Executive Director of Educational Services Zena Stenvik, along with Principals Jeff Cacek, Michele DeWitt, Ed Fellows and Dan Wrobleski shared with the Board and congratulated licensed faculty newly tenured in the District as of July 1, 2018. Tenured teachers include: Lindsey Borsky, Ellen Green, Emily Holter, Marc Jerue, Nancy Kenevan, Jeff Martinson, Jennifer Peterson, Kendra Rimmereid, Amy Vojta, Theodore Ngeh, Cassandra Scott, Tia Thompson, Callee Aydt, Stephanie Bordewick, Anne Knutson, Kimberly Olszanski and Laura Smith.

    Building Vision Card -- North Park Elementary
    NP class Executive Director of Educational Services Zena Stenvik, North Park Elementary Principal Jeff Cacek and North Park Elementary Dean Nathan Meyer presented information on the Vision Cards for North Park that tie to the District Strategic Plan. There were no governance questions with this presentation. View the presentation.

    American Indian Education Update
    Executive Director of Educational Services Zena Stenvik and Parent Advisory Council Member Cheril Davies presented an update on the District's American Indian Education program. View the presentation.

    OPEB Trust Incumbency
    Director of Finance & Operations Bernice Humnick presented information on the Other Postemployment (OPEB) Trust Incumbency to be administered by Wells Fargo Bank, National Association. The OPEB Trust is used to pay post-employment benefits to certain eligible employees of the District. 


    Action Items 

    ElectionResults Canvass Returns of School District's General and Special School Board Elections Resolution
    The Board approved the resolution to canvass the results of the Nov. 6, 2018 General and Special School Board elections.

    Board Policies - Second Reading
    The Board approved the changes to School Board Policies 102 - Equal Education Opportunity; 205 - Open Meetings and Closed; 206 - Public
    Participation in School Board Meetings/Complaints about Persons at School Board Meetings and Data Privacy Considerations; 401 - Equal Employment Opportunity; 419 - Tobacco-Free Environment; 421 - Gifts to Employees. These policies appeared on the Oct. 23 meeting for review.

    Education Assistant Contract
    The Board approved an agreement between Columbia Heights Public Schools and the District's Education Assistant employees for 2018-2019, 2019-2020 and 2020-2021.
