Sept. 25, 2018 School Board Meeting

  • Acknowledgement of Contributions

    Chair John Larkin announced a resolution to accept current contributions in the amount of $6,943.  The School Board accepts with appreciation the contributions of these gifts and donations.


    Reports from Members of the Board

    Chair John Larkin attended the tailgating gathering prior to attending the CHHS school football game, attended the School Board Chair meeting, and had many conversations with community members.

    Vice Chair Naty Severson attended the School Board Chair meeting, School Board Work Session, CHHS tennis match, tailgating prior to attending the CHHS football game, and had many conversations with community members.

    Treasurer Lorien Mueller attended the School Board Work Session; CHHS swim meet, CA football game, CHHS football game, and conversations with community members.

    Clerk Hala Asamarai was absent.

    Director Molly Lewis attended the School Board Work Session, CA football game, tailgating prior to attending the CHHS football game, and the first adaptive soccer game.

    Director Laura Palmer was absent.


    Superintendent's Report

    Superintendent Kathy Kelly attended a Labor Management meeting, a team meeting with Local 710 president and chief negotiator along with Executive Director of Educational Services Zena Stenvik, and a meeting on planning the CHHS New York Study Seminar. Superintendent Kelly also participated in the celebration of North Park Elementary’s Green Ribbon School Award. Superintendent Kelly attended a meeting with the University of Minnesota on a research project on concurrent enrollment. Superintendent Kelly announced a tentative agreement with Educational Assistants Union that will be brought to a School Board closed session at a future meeting. Superintendent Kelly also met with the Columbia Heights City Manager and many conversations with School Board members.

    Highland Elementary Principal Michele DeWitt presented information on the opening of school activities at Highland Elementary. View the presentation.

    Metro North Adult Basic Education (ABE) Program
    Community Education & Communications Director Kristen Stuenkel and ABE Program Supervisor Kathleen Moriarty presented information about the Metro North ABE program located at 4111 Central Ave. that serves adults in our community.     Summer Academy
    Executive Director of Educational Service Zena Stenvik, Summer Academy Executive Director Michael Schroeder, Research and Assessment Coordinator Disa Fabeck presented information on Summer Academy. There were no governance questions with this presentation. View the presentation.

    Strategic Direction D: Acknowledge and address tensions and opportunities for employments and partnership between employees

    Action Items 

    Pay 2019 Preliminary Levy
    Director of Finance and Operations Bernice Humnick asked the School Board to approve the Pay 2019 Preliminary Levy. The School Board voted to approve the Pay 2019 Preliminary Levy at the maximum. View the presentation.

    Insurance Renewal Approval
    Director of Finance and Operations Bernice Humnick and Steve McAlpin with McAlpin Agency sought approval of the insurance renewal. The School Board voted to approve renewal of the insurance policy. View the presentation.

    Assurance of Compliance with State and Federal Law Prohibiting Discrimination
    Executive Director of Educational Services Zena Stenvik and Director of Human Resources Lindsey Bennett sought School Board approval of the Assurance of Compliance with State and Federal Law Prohibiting Discrimination. The School Board voted to approve the Assurance of Compliance with State and Federal Law Prohibiting Discrimination.

    National School Boards Association (NSBA) Annual Conference
    School Board Chair John Larkin sought approval for two School Board Members to attend the NSBA Annual Conference. The School Board voted to approve two members to attend the NSBA Annual Conference.
