The Superintendent discussed the need to have the new Strategic Roadmap completed by early Fall 2018. Discussion included communicating out early and consistently so as much of the greater school district community are aware, and can contribute, to the development of the new Strategic Roadmap.
Safe Schools Resolution
Per the request of School Board Members Laura Palmer and Lorien Mueller and Director of Technology and Security Services Bryan Hennekens discussed a draft Safe Schools Resolution. This presentation was based on concerns shared by some parents as a result of continuous school shootings throughout the country and how this issue could affect Columbia Heights Public Schools. The draft Resolution called on State and Federal elected officials to enact and sign into law legislation that will make schools safer and more secure. There was discussion among the members relating to School Board span of control, suggested changes, financial concerns or if a Resolution (or modified) is applicable versus some other form of communication. The members agreed to direct Administration to modify the draft Resolution and provide an updated version at an upcoming School Board meeting.
Member Hala Asamarai discussed research regarding School Board interaction with communities with transparency and outreach engagement key components. She shared examples what some other school districts do with their community goals, strategies and tactics. Director Asamarai suggested one option of a meeting where community members could come, meet and share their thoughts with the School Board and administrative staff regarding educational issues affecting students and families. The members had a fruitful discussion with different ideas of how to improve communications and relations with constituents. The School Board agreed to continue this conversation.
