    Feb. 13, 2018 Regular School Board Meeting 

    Hylander Highlights

    The School Board honored the following teachers and students:

    Jill Passage Peg Nelson Teachers Jill Passage and Peg Nelson for being selected as 2017 TIES Exceptional Teaches (read the news release). The two were chosen by Superintendent Kathy Kelly for the award, which recognizes teachers who use technology to positively impact student learning and model best practices in their classroom. 

    Manny Alvarez Columbia Heights High School (CHHS) senior Manny Alvarez for being selected by the Minnesota Football Coaches Association to play in the 2017 Minnesota High School All-Star game. Among the senior’s football accomplishments are Twin Cities All-District and Offense Lineman of the Year (Red Sub District) for 2016 and 2017 and 2017 Star Tribune All-Metro Second Team (read the news release).

    Alex Giles CHHS senior Alex Giles was selected to the 2018 First Team, All-State Boys Soccer Team. Alex was nominated by his coach and selected as one of 48 total players statewide for the team by the Minnesota State High School Soccer Coaches Association to play in the All-Star game.

    Amara Thompson Columbia Academy eighth-grader Amara Thompson for her selection as the winner of the statewide middle school division 2018 Youth Art Month Flag Design contest (read the news release).

    The CHHS Girls Swimming Team (Safa Ait Daoud, Natalie Bluhm, Anja Erickson, Kira Greenfield, Melissa Hosch, Isabella Rardin, Samantha Alexon) for being named Academic Team Champions by the Minnesota State High School Swimming and Diving Coaches Association. Due to prior commitments, the students were unable to attend.


    Communication to the School Board 

    A community member spoke to the School Board about the March 30 Springbrook Nature Center Spree fundraiser. A parent spoke about curriculum as it related to a former class.


    Reports from Members of the Board

    Chair John Larkin participated in the Jan. 9 Organizational and Regular Business Meetings, the Jan. 30 School Board Special Called Meeting and the Feb. 13 Policy Sub-Committee and Chair Meetings. Chair Larkin also attended the high school Variety Show and a wrestling match.

    Vice Chair Naty Severson participated in the Jan. 9 Organizational and Regular Business Meetings, the Jan. 30 School Board Special Called Meeting and the Feb. 13 Policy Sub-Committee and Chair Meetings. Vice Chair Severson also attended a swim meet and basketball games.

    Treasurer Lorien Mueller participated in the Jan. 9 Organizational and Regular Business Meetings and the Jan. 30 School Board Special Called Meeting. Treasurer Mueller also had conversations with community members and School Board Director Lewis.
     
    Clerk Hala Asamarai participated in the Jan. 30 School Board Special Called Meeting, the Feb. 13 Policy Sub-Committee meeting and had discussions with constituents.

    Director Laura Palmer participated in the Jan. 9 Organizational and Regular Business Meetings, the Jan. 30 School Board Special Called Meeting and the Feb. 13 Policy Sub-Committee Meeting. She also participated in NE Metro Intermediate District 916 Board Meeting and a Tribal Consultation Consortium Meeting.

    Director Molly Lewis participated in the Jan. 9 Organizational and Regular Business Meetings. Director Lewis attended Ninth Grade Parent Information Night at the high school, parent conferences at CHHS and Columbia Academy and the Bullying Prevention Roundtable at Columbia Academy. She also attended varsity boys' and girls' basketball games, met with Superintendent Kathy Kelly and had conversations with Treasurer Mueller and constituents.

    American Indian Education program American Indian Education (AIE) Resolution

    Director of Teaching and Learning Zena Stenvik presented an update, consistent with Minnesota Statutes, Section 124D.78, on the AIE program and the annual parent committee resolution of concurrence with District AIE programs.

    Revised 2017-2018 Budget

    Director of Finance and Operations Kristine Carr, consistent with School Board Policy 701.1, provided a proposed amendment to the 2017-2018 District Budget. The proposal will be presented to the School Board, as an Action Item, at the Feb. 27, 2018 Business Meeting. View the PowerPoint presentation.

    Tennis Court Bids

    Tennis court collage Director Carr presented a recommendation to award the reconstruction of the high school tennis courts to Bituminous Roadways. The project will be funded with Long-Term Facility Maintenance dollars and is included in the 2018-2019 Budget. There were six bids received with the highest being $420,000 and the lowest (Bituminous) at $264,333 (under budget). The proposal will be presented to the School Board, as an Action Item, at the Feb. 27, 2018 Business Meeting.

    2018-2019 Calendar

    Director of Human Resources Lindsey Bennett presented the proposed 2018-2019 Calendar of key District and school dates. The proposal will be presented to the School Board, as an Action Item, at the Feb. 27, 2018 Business Meeting.

    School Board Recognition Week

    Director Bennett shared that the Minnesota School Boards Association has set Feb. 19-23 as Minnesota School Board Recognition Week as a time to "build awareness and understanding of the vital function an elected Board of Education plays in our society. Director Bennett shared Columbia Heights Public Schools is joining "all public school districts across the state to celebrate School Board Recognition Week to honor local board members for their commitment to the Columbia Heights community and its children."

    Action Items

    Teacher/ECFE Teacher Seniority Lists

    The School Board approved the Teacher/ECFE Seniority Lists.

    Seniority Lists 

    The School Board approved for seniority lists for Custodian, Clerical, Food Service, Education Assistant and Lunch Duty Monitor employees.

    Discontinuance of Programs and Positions Resolution 

    The School Board approved the annual resolution.


    Board Topics

    Vice Chair Severson congratulated the Columbia Heights baseball team for winning the Fire and Ice fundraiser. Member Mueller announced the Performing Arts Night will be held March 2 at 5 p.m. at the CHHS Performing Arts Center.
