    Dan Wrobleski_John Larkin Hylander Highlights 

    The School Board honored Columbia Heights High School (CHHS) for being selected as one of U.S. News and World Reports' top schools for 2017. CHHS Chair John Larkin recognized the achievement with CHHS Principal Dan Wrobleski who thanked the School Board, the Superintendent and the community for their support. Read the news release.

    Reports from Members of the Board

    Chair John Larkin participated in theSchool Board at Convocation  Aug. 22 Business Meeting, the Sept. 12 Sub-Committee on Policy Meeting and the Sept. 12 Board Chair Meeting. He also participated in Convocation, volunteered at the all-staff picnic and attended the New Teacher Induction and the follow-on tour of the District and community. He attended the CHHS Open House. Chair Larkin asked for a moment of silence to recognize two valued employees, District Technical and Building Support Specialist Tim Larsen and American Indian Education Check and Connect Mentor David Larsen (not related), who passed away within the past three weeks.

    School Board members Vice Chair Laura Palmer participated in the Aug. 22 Business Meeting and the Sept. 12 Board Chair Meeting. Ms. Palmer participated in a NE Metro Intermediate District 916 Board Meeting. She also attended Convocation and the all-staff picnic.

    Naty Severson Clerk Naty Severson participated in the Aug. 22 Business Meeting and the Sept.12 Sub-Committee on Policy Meeting. She also attended Convocation and the all-staff picnic. Ms. Severson attended the CHHS Open House and several football games and tennis matches.

    Hala Asamarai Treasurer Hala Asamarai participated in the Aug. 22 Business Meeting and the Sept. 12 Sub-Committee on Policy meeting. She also attended Convocation and the New Teacher Induction. She also attended the CHHS Open House.

    Director Molly Lewis participated in the Aug. 22 Business Meeting. She also attended Convocation, the all-staff picnic, the New Teacher Induction and open houses at Highland Elementary School, Columbia Academy and CHHS. Ms. Lewis attended varsity and Columbia Academy football games, had conversations with constituents and met with the Superintendent.

    Director Lorien Mueller participated in the Aug. 22 Business Meeting. She also attended Convocation, the all-staff picnic and the New Teacher Induction.


    Superintendent's Report 

    Supt Kelly and Kristen Stuenkel Superintendent Kathy Kelly participated in the Aug. 22 Business Meeting and the Sept. 12 Chair Meeting. She attended the Aug. 25 New Teacher Induction. The Superintendent also participated in Convocation, where she awarded Director of Community Education Kristen Stuenkel with the Superintendent's Above and Beyond Award. Superintendent Kelly participated in a collaborative partnership meeting with the executive director of the Equity Alliance and that Director of Technology and Security Services Bryan Hennekens and she attended the TIES Joint Powers Meeting. She added that negotiations continue with Local 710. The Superintendent also noted that the District recognized more than 80 employees for a total of 650 years of service in CHPS.

    Antwan Harris Introduction of K-12 Activities Director

    Principal Wrobleski introduced Antwan Harris as the new K-12 Activities Director. Read the news release announcing Mr. Harris.

    Opening of School Building Updates

    Highland student Columbia Academy teacher and student Director of Community Education Kristen Stuenkel and Principals Michele DeWitt (Highland Elementary School), Jeff Cacek (North Park Elementary School), Ed Fellows (Valley View Elementary School), Duane Berkas (Columbia Academy) and Wrobleski provided an overview of their first week of school. Their presentations included enrollment, programming, family involvement, key messaging, initiatives, outreach and student expectations. View their PowerPoint presentation.

    Food Services

    Director of Finance and Operations Bill Holmgren introduced new Sodexo General Manager Ciara McDonald and provided a Food Services update, including healthy menus and budget information.

    Pay 2018 Preliminary LevyBill Holmgren

    Director Holmgren reported on enrollment, Net Tax Capacity, Sales Ratio, Adjusted Net Tax Capacity, General Operations and Designated, Operating Capital, Community Education Levy, Building Fund and Debt Service Levy. Director Holmgren shared some adjustments to the numbers reported may change and that the District budget will be more concrete this November. Lastly, he recommended that the School Board, at a future Business Meeting, pass a motion for the "Maximum" levy. View Director Holmgren's PowerPoint presentation.

    Curriculum CycleZena Stenvik_Tara Thurkal

    Director of Teaching and Learning Zena Stenvik and Curriculum Coordinator Tara Thukral provided an annual update on the seven-year curriculum review cycle. Their update reflected the most recent information from Minnesota Department of Education regarding revisions of standards in key content areas. View their PowerPoint presentation.


    Action Items

    Constitution Week Resolution

    The School Board approved a resolution stating Columbia Heights Public Schools will celebrate Constitution Week September 17 through 23, 2017.

    National School Boards Association Annual Conference

    The School Board approved two members to attend the 2018 conference.
