    Reports from Members of the Board

    hide Chair John Larkin participated in the June 13 Business Meeting, the June 20 Work Session and the June 27 Board Chair Meeting. Larkin attended the Sub-Committee meeting on Policy and the June 27 Board Chair Meeting. He also had several conversation with constituents.

    Vice Chair Laura Palmer participated in the June 13 Business Meeting, the June 20 Work Session and the June 27 Board Chair Meeting. Palmer walked in the Columbia Heights Jamboree Parade. She also attended a board retreat with NE Metro Intermediate District 916. 

    Clerk Naty Severson was not present.

    Treasurer Hala Asamarai participated in the June 13 Business Meeting and the June 20 Work Session. Asamarai attended the class of 2017 commencement, met with constituents and participated in the Columbia Heights Jamboree Parade. She also attended the Sub-Committee meeting on Policy.

    Director Molly Lewis participated in the June 13 Business Meeting and the June 20 Work Session. Lewis walked in the Columbia Heights Jamboree Parade and participated in a 5K run hosted by the Columbia Heights Boosters. 

    Director Lorien Mueller participated in the June 13 Business Meeting and the June 20 Work Session. Mueller attended the Silver Lake Symphonic Winds community band concert held at Silverwood Park. She also watched the Columbia Heights drum line perform in the Brooklyn Center parade and participated in the Columbia Heights Jamboree Parade.


    hide Superintendent's Report 

    Superintendent Kathy Kelly participated in the June 13 Business Meeting, the June 20 Work Session and the June 27 Board Chair Meeting. Superintendent Kelly participated in a TIES planning session and attend the Citizens for Safer Streets meeting. She also attended the Silver Lake Symphonic Winds community band concert, attended an E-12 Administrative retreat, participated in a webinar about school election law and walked in the Columbia Heights Jamboree Parade. 

    The Superintendent shared that Summer Academy is in full swing - hosted Columbia Heights High School and serving approximately 1,300 students. She met with the Superintendents of Anoka-Hennepin, Spring Lake Park and Fridley to provide feedback on the ReImagine Minnesota document. Kelly also attended the Sub-Committee meeting on Policy and the June 27 Board Chair Meeting.

    Year-in-Review School District Highlights

    Director of Teaching and Learning Zena Stenvik shared a Year-in-Review presentation. The presentation provided an overview of District and School activities, accomplishments and more from July 2016 to June 2017. View the presentation.

    Valley View teachers Strategic Direction D: Acknowledge and Address Tensions and Opportunities for Employment and Partnership Between Employees

    Director of Human Resources Lindsey Bennett presented information on the Strategic Direction D - acknowledging and addressing tensions and opportunities for employments and partnership between employees. View the presentation.

    Student using technology Personalized Learning Initiative

    Director Stenvik, Director of Technology and Security Bryan Hennekens and Personalized Learning Facilitator Leslie Maher presented information on the Personal Learning Initiative within the district in our current implementation in grades 4-9. The presentation gave an overview of Personalized Learning in Columbia Heights and reviewed data used to measure progress. The presentation also covered what to expect as we move forward with the Personalized Learning Initiative in the next school year.


    Action Items

    2017-2018 Budget

    The School Board approved the 2017-2018 budget which was discussed at the June 13 meeting.

    Capital Building Bond Referendum

    The School Board approved a resolution relating to the issuance of school building bonds and calling an election thereon discussed at the June 13 meeting.

    Board Policy - Second Reading

    The School Board approved Policy 534 - Unpaid Meal Charges. This policy appeared for review at the June 20 work session.

    External User Access Recertification System Official with Authority

    The School Board approved the authority for the External User Access Recertification System discussed at the June 13 meeting.

    Adult Basic Education (ABE) Lease

    The School Board approved the ABE Lease discussed at the at the June 20 meeting.

    Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) Grants

    The School Board approved the ESSA Grants for 2017-2018 brought to the Board at its June 13 meeting.

    LEA Authorization

    The School Board approved the LEA Authorization discussed at the June 13 meeting.

    LEAP

    The School Board approved the LEAP Program at Highland Elementary discussed at the June 13 meeting. The Board gave approval to end the 2-year pilot phase and establish LEAP as a program.

    Anchor Program

    The School Board approved the continuation of the Anchor Program as a sustained program within the District discussed at the June 13 meeting.

    TIES Membership

    The School Board approved a resolution to to issue a notice of withdrawal of the School District’s membership in (TIES) Technology Information Educational Services consortium discussed at the June 13 meeting.

    Closed Session

    In accordance with Minn. Stat. §13D.03, the School Board met in closed session for the purpose of discussing negotiations strategy.
