May 23, 2017 Business Meeting
The School Board honored Athena Award winner Pashia Scott and Oscar Eng Award recipient Ben Bardell. The Athena Award recognizes an outstanding senior young female athlete from each of the Minneapolis area high schools by honoring each woman for her achievements in one or several sports.
The Oscar Eng award goes to an outstanding senior male student at Columbia Heights High School who has excelled in extracurricular activities and demonstrated consistent leadership qualities. Read the District's News Release.
Acknowledgement of Contributions
Chair John Larkin announced, and the School Board approved, a resolution for accepting current contributions in the amount of $27,939.54. The total fiscal year 2016-2017 monetary contributions to date is $99,373.54.
Reports from Members of the Board
Chair John Larkin participated in the May 16 Work Session and Listening Session and the May 23 Chair Meeting. He attended the Columbia Heights High School (CHHS) Academic Awards Night, the Employee of the Year reception, the Columbia Heights Mayor's Community Prayer Breakfast, the Expressions art show, the CHHS Academic Awards Ceremony and the Pow Wow. He also attended the CHHS Band and Choir concerts, a girls' softball game and a Silverwood Symphonic Winds concert and cooked at the North Park Elementary School BBQ.
Vice Chair Laura Palmer participated in the May 16 Work Session and the May 23 Chair Meeting. She attended the Employee of the Year reception, the CHHS band and choir concerts and had a meeting with Board member Lorien Mueller.
Clerk Naty Severson participated in the May 16 Work Session and Listening Session. She attended the Employee of the Year reception, the Columbia Heights Mayor's Community Prayer Breakfast and had conversations with constituents. She also attended varsity and middle school baseball games.
Treasurer Hala Asamarai participated in the May 16 Work Session and had a meeting with Board Member Lorien Mueller. Ms. Asamarai attended the Columbia Heights Mayor's Prayer Breakfast, the Valley View PTO Meeting, the CHHS Academic Awards Ceremony and the Expressions Art Show.
Director Molly Lewis participated in the May 16 Work Session. She attended the elementary Expressions Art Show, the Columbia Heights Mayor's Prayer Breakfast and the Prom Grand March. Ms. Lewis also attended a girls softball game and track meets.
Director Lorien Mueller participated in the May 16 Work Session. She attended the Employee of the Year reception, the CHHS Academic Awards Night, the Pow Wow and the Expressions Art Show. She also attended the Highland Elementary PTO meeting, the CHHS band concert and the Silverwood Symphonic Woods concert. Ms. Mueller had conversations with Board Members Larkin, Palmer and Asamarai, Superintendent Kathy Kelly and parents.
Superintendent Kathy Kelly participated in the May 16 Work Session and the May 23 Chair Meeting. She reported the District has completed a Federal Title Audit, that she and Director of Teaching and Learning Zena Stenvik had a phone conference with the College Board followed by literacy strategy site visits to the high school and North Park Elementary School. Superintendent Kelly participated in a NE Metro Intermediate District 916 Superintendent's Advisory Meeting and a CHHS Anchor Program quarterly meeting. The Superintendent attended the Employee of the Year reception, the CHHS Academic Awards Night, the Expressions Art Show, Columbia Heights Mayor's Prayer Breakfast, the North Park BBQ and the American Indian Education Pow Wow. Superintendent Kelly recognized CHHS Seniors Devin Crowe and Nathaniel TwoBears who were honored at the Pow Wow with an eagle feather. The Superintendent thanked the Minnesota Twins Community Fund and the Columbia Heights Boosters for their $12,000 donation to improve the Ramsdell Park softball facilities. She also thanked volunteer members of the Management Team, Ms. Dawn Hoium, Ms. Susie Vescio and Chef Justin Shroyer for preparing and serving the 2017 Prom Dinner. Superintendent Kelly also met with members of the School Board.

Employee of the Year
Director of Human Resources Lindsey Bennett introduced the 2017 Columbia Heights Public School District Employee of the Year Shari Gestson. Ms. Gestson is the Administrative Assistant to the Principal of Valley View Elementary School. Read the District's news release.
Community Survey Results
Don Lifto and Kelly Smith of Springsted, Inc. provided the findings of a recent community survey relating to voter tolerance. This agenda item was previously presented at the May 16 Work Session. View the PowerPoint presentation.
Director of Finance and Operations Bill Holmgren and Director of Technology and Security Services Bryan Hennekens discussed with the School Board possible North Park Elementary School, Columbia Heights High School Performing Arts Center and related renovations and cost estimates. Type III Transportation Contract
Director Holmgren presented the School Board with the results of quotes for transporting Type III homeless and out-of-district Special Education students. This will be included in the June 13 School Board agenda as an action item. View the PowerPoint presentation.
Strategic Direction E: Tell Our Story
Director of Communications Casey Mahon, Director of Technology and Security Services Bryan Hennekens provided the School Board with the annual update of Strategic Direction E, “Tell our Story.” The presentation included reporting out on six questions with an overall score comparison to the previous year. Inclusive Curriculum Strand
Interim Director of Student Services Laura McLuen and Director of Teaching and Learning Zena Stenvik explained that the objective of the Inclusive Curriculum and instruction is to address K-12 academic standards in multiple content areas. This is done, they said, by embedding "absent narratives and multiple perspectives into both curricular and instructional practices so that students see themselves reflected in the curriculum and diversity is honored and all individuals are respected." Transportation BidsThe School Board approved a transportation contract to Lorenz Bus Service as presented at the May 9, 2017 Business Meeting.
Theater Courses and CurriculumThe School Board approved new high school semester-long Acting, Movement/Dance, Theatre Studies and Musical Theatre courses as presented at the May 16, 2017 Work Session.
K-1 Literacy CurriculumThe School Board approved the curriculum as presented at the May 9, 2017 Business Meeting.
Termination and Non-Renewal of a Probationary Teacher Contract ResolutionThe School Board approved the resolution.
In accordance with Minnesota Statute 13D.05 Preliminary Consideration of Allegations Against an Individual, the School Board adjourned to a closed session.
