    April 11, 2017 Business Meeting

    Reports from Members of the BoardJohn Larkin

    Chair John Larkin participated in the March 21 Regular Board Meeting, the April 11 School Board Sub-Committee on Policy Meeting and Chair Meeting. He attended the North Park Elementary School Fine Arts Night (pictured), Valley View Elementary School Carnival and a Columbia Heights High School (CHHS) Boys Basketball State Tournament game. Chair Larkin also attended a Citizens for Safer Streets community meeting. He announced an April 12 fundraiser for a CHHS parent.

    Vice Chair Laura Palmer participated in the March 21 Regular Board Meeting and the April 11 Chair Meeting. She also participated in a NE Metro Intermediate District 916 Board Meeting and an Association of Metropolitan School Districts (AMSD) Legislative Update Meeting.

    Director Molly Lewis participated in the March 21 Regular Board Meeting, attended two CHHS Boys' Basketball State Tournament games and a track meet. She also had conversations with parents and community members.

    Treasurer Hala Asamarai participated in the March 21 Regular Board Meeting. She attended the National School Board Conference and participated in the School Board Sub-Committee on Policy Meeting.
    Naty Severson, Lorien Mueller, Molly Lewis
    Clerk Naty Severson attended CHHS Boys' Basketball State Tournament games and a softball game. She attended the National School Board Association Conference and participated in the Sub-Committee on Policy Meeting. Director Severson also had discussions with community members and School Board directors.

    Director Lorien Mueller participated in the March 21 Regular Board Meeting. She also attended two CHHS Boys' Basketball State Tournament games, a Highland Elementary School girls' night, a Citizens for Safer Streets community meeting and Columbia Academy 5th Grade Open House.


    Superintendent's Report 

    Wendell Matthews Superintendent Kathy Kelly participated in the March 21 Regular Board Meeting, the April 11 Chair Meeting and the School Board Sub-Committee Meeting on Policy. Superintendent Kelly was a chaperone for the March 25-April 1 New York City Study Seminar trip (view photos of the New York City Seminar on the high school's home page). The Superintendent announced that Erin Edwardson Stern (photo with students) is the 2017 CHPS Local 710 Teacher of the Year. Superintendent Kelly attended two Boys' Basketball State Tournament gTeacher of the Year ames and congratulated the team and coaches for finishing fourth in the state. She also congratulated Guard Wendell Matthews (photo right) who was selected to the 2017 Class AAA Minnesota State Boys’ Basketball All-Tournament Team. Superintendent Kelly invited the public to the CHHS Drama Department Spring Musical “Little Shop of Horrors." Performances are scheduled for 7 p.m. April 21, 22, 23, 27, 28 and 29 at the CHHS Performing Arts Center.

    Community Education Video

    Director of Communications Casey Mahon introduced and Director of Community Education Kristen Stuenkel showed the program's new informational video. The video is aligned with the District's Mission, Core Values, Strategic Roadmap and Comprehensive Communications Plan. In addition to the School Board Report, the video is available on the department's home page, Mini Adventures and Adventure Club webpages, the District Facebook site and the District's Educational Television Channel.

    Blooming Heights students Blooming Heights Edible Schoolyard - Outdoor Classroom Update

    Director Stuenkel and Agriculture Specialist Maya Lemon provided information about the curricular developments and programming in Blooming Heights Edible Schoolyard. The two shared examples of how classes from early childhood through high school are tying lessons in the garden to curriculum. View the PowerPoint presentation

    Statewide Health Improvement Partnership (SHIP) Grant Update

    Moving Heights

    Director Stuenkel provided information about the Statewide Health Improvement Partnership (SHIP) 4.0 grant through Anoka County. This was an informational presentation about funding and support. View the PowerPoint presentation.

    Active School Day

    Director Stuenkel, Director of Teaching and Learning Zena Stenvik and Highland, North Park and Valley View Principals Michele DeWitt, Jeff Cacek and Willie Fort provided information on active learning strategies implemented throughout the school day. They reported a teacher survey was conducted along with classroom walkthroughs that provided the following information: (a) How often active "brain breaks" or "brain boosts" are incorporated into classroom routines, (b) How often active seating is used in classrooms, (c) How often active transitions (when students are up and moving out of their seats) are incorporated into classroom routines and (d) Active strategies used to allow movement for those students who need it.     Mindset The Power of Yet Growth Mindset

    Directors Stenvik and Stuenkel and Principals DeWitt, Cacek and Fort provided information on growth mindset work that impacts both adult and student learning in Columbia Heights Public Schools. Director Stenvik shared that through District professional development, staff have learned about using and fostering a growth mindset. She offered specific areas where mindset work takes place.     Solar Array

    Director of Finance and Operations Bill Holmgren provided information about the "Made in Minnesota Solar Incentive" program, in which North Park Elementary School and Columbia Heights High School are participating. View the PowerPoint presentation.


    Action Items

    2018/2019 Employee Group Health Insurance Renewal

    The School Board approved the South Central Service Cooperative bid.  The renewal consists of a 1.5 percent increase in the first year of a two-year contract. This was presented as an informational item at the March 21, 2017 Business Meeting

    Resolution Termination, Elimination and Reduction of Positions and Programs

    The School Board approved the request.

    Administrator Proposed for Unrequested Leave of Absence

    Pursuant to Minn. Stat. §122A.40, Subd.7, the School Board adopted a resolution to place a tenured Administrator on unrequested leave of absence.  

    Designation of Electronic Transfer Designees

    The School Board approved Director Holmgren and Deputy Director of Finance Denise Sundstrom as appointed designees for processing electronic transfers.
