    March 21, 2017 Business Meeting

    Acknowledgment of Contributions

    Chair John Larkin announced, and the School Board approved, a resolution for accepting current contributions in the amount of $4,525,00. The total fiscal year 2016-2017 monetary contributions to date is $60,667.54.


    Reports from Members of the Board

    Chair John Larkin participated in the Feb. 28 Regular Board Meeting, attended the Columbia Heights High School (CHHS) choir concert and the CHHS boys semi-final basketball game.

    Vice Chair Laura Palmer participated in the Feb. 28 Regular Board Meeting and the March 21 Board Chair Meeting. She participated in a NE Metro Intermediate District 916 Board meeting and an Association of Metropolitan School Districts' meeting. Vice Chair Palmer also attended a CHHS choir concert.Hala Asamarai

    Treasurer Molly Lewis participated in the Feb. 28 Regular Board Meeting and the March 21 Listening Session. She attended girls' and boys' section basketball games and had conversations with staff and parents.

    Clerk Hala Asamarai participated in the Feb. 28 Regular Board Meeting and the March 21 Listening Session. She participated in the Reimagine Minnesota community conversations (pictured), read to students at North Park Elementary School and attended conferences at CHHS.

    Director Naty Severson attended the Columbia Heights High School Boys' March 16 basketball game in which Boys Basketball Team they won the Section 4, Class 3A championship, advancing them to the state competition. Director Severson attended Columbia Academy conferences, the boys' section basketball game and had a meeting with Superintendent Kathy Kelly. She also had a breakfast meeting with Vice Chair Palmer and had conversations with community members.

    Director Lorien Mueller participated in the Feb. 28 Regular Board Meeting and had conversations with community members.


    Superintendent's Report 

    Reimagine Minnesota Superintendent Kathy Kelly attended a City of Columbia Heights Circle Terrace community meeting. She reported the E-12 Administrative Team met to discuss the beginning stages of developing a new strategic roadmap and met again for the third round of staffing. She thanked the 20 student, staff, community and School Board volunteers who participated in the Reimagine Minnesota community conversations. Superintendent Kelly participated in three College Board presentationsCollege Board for metro-area educational leaders (pictured with College Board Vice President Greg Walker). She also attended the March 16 boys' basketball game and provided an update on the CHHS state tournament fan support. The Superintendent shared that the search for a new Principal at Valley View Elementary School is in progress and that planning continues for the CHHS choir and AP Arts' New York City Study Seminar (March 25 to April 1). Lastly, she thanked Chair Larkin and members of the School Board for conversations


    Reports and Information Items

    Highland Elementary School Video

    Director of Communications Casey Mahon and Highland Elementary School Principal Michele DeWitt showed the school's new informational video. The video is aligned with the District's Mission, Core Values, Strategic Roadmap and Comprehensive Communications Plan. In addition to the School Board Report, the video is available on the school's home page, the District Facebook site and the District's Educational Television Channel.

     

    K-12 Activities Update

    CHHS athletes Columbia Academy's Annie Jr. Interim K-12 Activities Director Troy Sagdalen provided the annual winter update, which included the number of students participating in 12 different athletics and activities. He provided athletic specifics on the Gymnastics and Dance teams, boys' swimming and diving, girls' and boys' basketball, wrestling, award-winners and a college signing. For activities, Mr. Sagdalen reported on Robotics, the Math Team, Knowledge Bowl, Future Problem Solvers, elementary activities, the upcoming spring musical and spring sports.     ECSU Class Size Survey

    Superintendent Kelly, Interim Director of Student Services Laura McLuen and Director of Finance and Operations Bill Holmgren briefed the School Board on a class size survey conducted by the Educational Cooperative Service Unit (ECSU). This study includes the analysis of 35 school districts in the metro area.  It provides information relating to the average class sizes in Columbia Heights Public Schools in relation to other districts.  View the PowerPoint presentation.

    Health Insurance Bids

    Director Bill Holmgren presented information on the submitted bids for health insurance that opened March 9.  Director Holmgren explained that every two years the District must bid its health insurance coverage for employees. View the PowerPoint presentation.

    Equity Training

    Director of Teaching and Learning Zena Stenvik provided information on possible NE Metro Intermediate District 916 equity training. Director Stenvik shared an overview of training topics that can include: Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity, Intercultural Conflict Styles and Team Building or Capacity Building or a training can be tailored for a group.     Explanation of ULA Process

    Superintendent Kelly, Director of Human Resources Lindsey Bennett and Director Holmgren presented information on the Unrequested Leave of Absence (ULA) process in accordance with Minnesota State Statute 122A.40. They reported that licensed staff who will be placed on an ULA will be brought forward at future School Board meeting as an action item per Minnesota State Statue 122A.40. 


    Board Topics

    Vice Chair Palmer suggested the School Board have a future discussion regarding the possible creation of a policy on electronic conferencing.
