Jan. 24, 2017 Business Meeting
The School Board honored 2016 TIES Exceptional Teacher Award winners Highland Elementary School Fifth-Grade Teacher Regina Skoy (left) and Columbia Academy Special Education Teacher Shannon Tuttle. The teachers were nominated by Superintendent Kathy Kelly for the statewide award, which recognizes teachers who use technology to positively impact student learning and model best practices in their classroom. Acknowledgement of Contributions
Chair John Larkin announced, and the School Board approved, a resolution for accepting current contributions in the amount of $24,421.40. The total fiscal year 2016-2017 monetary contributions to date is $46,181.75.

Chair John Larkin participated in the Jan. 10 School Board Policy Sub-Committee, the Jan. 10 Business Meeting, the Jan. 24 Board Chair Meeting and discussions with Superintendent Kathy Kelly.
Vice Chair Laura Palmer participated in the Jan. 17 Work Session, attended the 2017 Minnesota School Board Association (MSBA) Leadership Conference and conferences at Columbia Heights High School.
Clerk Naty Severson participated in the Jan. 10 School Board Policy Sub-Committee, the Jan. 10 Business Meeting and the Jan. 17 Work Session. Clerk Severson attended the 2017 MSBA Leadership Conference (pictured right with Director Molly Lewis and Valley View English Learner Teacher Stephanie Kilpatrick). She attended wrestling, basketball and swim meets, a band concert at Columbia Academy and a National Geographic Geography Bee also at Columbia Academy. Clerk Severson also met with community members and School Board directors.
Treasurer Hala Asamarai participated in the Jan. 10 School Board Policy Sub-Committee, the Jan. 17 Listening Session and the Jan. 17 Work Session. Treasurer Asamarai also met with constituents.
Director Molly Lewis participated in the Jan. 10 Business Meeting, the Jan. 17 Listening Session, the Jan. 17 Work Session and the 2017 MSBA Leadership Conference. She also attended high school and Highland Elementary School parent conferences and a parent meeting for incoming freshmen. Director Lewis also attended a basketball game.
Director Lorien Mueller participated in the Jan. 10 Business Meeting, the Jan. 17 Work Session and the Jan. 23 New School Board Orientation. She participated in Phase II training, high school conferences, a Community Education Advisory Council meeting and a meeting with Superintendent Kelly and Director of Finance and Operations Bill Holmgren. Director Mueller also attended varsity boys' and junior varsity girls' basketball games.
Superintendent Kathy Kelly participated in the Jan. 10 School Board Policy Sub-Committee, the Jan. 10 Business Meeting, the Jan. 17 Work Session and the Jan. 23 New School Board Orientation. The superintendent participated in NE Metro 916 Superintendent's Advisory Committee and North Suburban Secondary Success Consortium meetings and in the second round of probationary evaluations. She reported the Anchor Program is on track and that planning for the New York Study Seminar is progressing. The superintendent also met with Columbia Heights Police Chief Scott Nadeau and thanked Director Mueller for her participation in School Board orientations. Superintendent Kelly also attended a boys' varsity basketball game and congratulated the high school staff for successful parent conferences.

Valley View Principal Willie Fort and Director of Communications Casey Mahon showed a new informational video for the school's communication's objectives.
External Parent Enrollment Survey
Dr. Don Lifton and Dr. Kelly Smith of Springsted LTD, Director of Finance and Operations Bill Holmgren and Director of Technology and Security Services Bryan Hennekens presented the background and the findings of a 2016 external survey of parents who live within the Columbia Heights Public School District. Internal Parent Enrollment Survey
Director of Student Services Nicolle Halabi, Director of Teaching and Learning Zena Stenvik and Director Hennekens presented the findings of a 2016 internal enrollment survey of current Columbia Heights Public Schools' residents and parents. View their presentation.
Facility Bond Referendum
Directors Holmgren and Hennekens provided information related to a possible facility bond referendum. This is a follow-up presentation from the Jan. 17 Work Session. The directors discussed facility needs, and potential costs, for North Park Elementary School and the Performing Arts Center at Columbia Heights High School. This was an informational item and at this time the School Board, from a governance standpoint, has not officially acted on this issue. View the PowerPoint presentation.
Directors Holmgren and Halabi provided information related to student transportation in this District. Director Holmgren discussed route times, current walking distances and areas, the number of students who walk to and from school, effects of changing the current walking areas and the number of busses needed and the costs that the District would incur if transportation routes were changed. Review of Policy 807 - Health and Safety
Director Holmgren shared the Minnesota Department of Education directs an annual review of the Health and Safety policy. Director Holmgren said there are no changes to the policy; this will be brought forward as an action item at a future Business Meeting.
Discontinuance of Programs and Positions Resolutions
The School Board approved the resolution as first presented at the Jan. 17 Work Session.
Bids for re-piping of High School Water Lines
The School Board approved the winning bid as first presented at the Jan. 10 Business Meeting.

Clerk Severson said the Boosters Club has challenged the School Board to participate in a Polar Plunge fundraiser to support a local assistance center.
