Feb. 28, 2017 Business Meeting
The School Board recognized Columbia Heights High School (CHHS) art students who earned a total of 26 Art Educators of Minnesota Gold Key (8), Silver Key (3) and Honorable Mention (15) 2017 Minnesota Scholastic Art Awards. The School Board also honored CHHS Art Teachers Dane Hodges and Sarah Honeywell. View the PowerPoint with photos of all of the awards and to know more read the District's News Release. Acknowledgment of Contributions
Chair John Larkin announced, and the School Board approved, a resolution for accepting current contributions in the amount of $9,960.79. The total fiscal year 2016-2017 monetary contributions to date is $56,142.54.
Reports from Members of the Board
Chair John Larkin participated in the Feb. 21 Special Called Meeting and Work Session and the Feb. 28 Board Chair Meeting. He attended the retirement celebration for former Director of Student Services Nicole Halabi and also a high school basketball game.
Vice Chair Laura Palmer participated in the Feb. 21 Special Called Meeting and Work Session and the Feb. 28 Board Chair Meeting. Vice Chair Palmer also acted as a judge for the inaugural Future Chefs Culinary Competition, had a breakfast meeting with School Board Director Severson and attended a high school band concert.
Treasurer Molly Lewis participated in the Feb. 21 Special Called Meeting and Work Session. She attended the retirement celebration for former Director Halabi and the Academic Awards night at Columbia Academy. Treasurer Lewis also went on a Highland Elementary School fourth-grade field trip, attended a high school basketball game and
had conversations with parents and students.
Clerk Hala Asamarai participated in the the Feb. 21 Special Called Meeting and Work Session and met with constituents.
Director Naty Severson was not present.
Director Lorien Mueller participated in the Feb. 21 Special Called Meeting and Work Session. She met with Superintendent Kathy Kelly, former Director Halabi and Director of Finance and Operations Bill Holmgren on Special Education Cross-Subsidy. She also had a meeting on curriculum and parent concerns with Director of Teaching and Learning Zena Stenvik and Superintendent Kelly. Director Mueller also attended a high school band concert.
Superintendent Kathy Kelly participated in the Feb. 21 Special Called Meeting and Work Session and the Feb. 28 Board Chair Meeting. The Superintendent reported Administrators participated in staff development addressing suspension, immigration and discipline as well as meetings on staffing and with Local 710. She attended the retirement ceremony for former Director Halabi and announced Interim Director Laura McLuen is now officially performing her new responsibilities. Superintendent Kelly and Director Stenvik met with a compliance officer who will audit federal programs throughout the District this spring and that the Performing Arts team met on theater curriculum development. The Superintendent reported she and Interim Director McLuen attended a NE Metro Intermediate District 916 Foundation event. Superintendent Kelly reported a broken water main occurred at the high school during the weekend, but was addressed quickly without significant disruption to operations. The Superintendent reported planning continues for the New York City educational trip and thanked the Boosters for their support at an elementary event before a basketball game. The Superintendent also had a meeting with School Board Director Mueller and volunteered as a judge for the inaugural Future Chefs Culinary Competition (watch the Fox 9 video).

Columbia Heights High School Video
Director of Communications Casey Mahon and Columbia Heights High School Principal Dan Wrobleski showed the updated high school informational video. The video is aligned with the District's Mission, Core Values, Strategic Roadmap and Comprehensive Communications Plan.
Interim Director of Student Services Laura McLuen and Education Support Coordinator Marcia Walker shared that Anchor is a therapeutic school program available to resident students in grades 8-12 with a qualifying mental illness diagnosis. The purpose of the program is to offer an in-district placement option for students to provide ongoing therapeutic and academic support while remaining on a pathway toward graduation. Minnesota Student Survey
Director of Teaching and Learning Zena Stenvik and Research and Assessment Coordinator Disa Fabeck explained that the Minnesota Student Survey is a valuable source of information about issues vital to the health, safety, and academic success of young people. The survey, administered jointly by the Minnesota Departments of Education, Health, Human Services and Public Safety, is used by school districts, county and state agencies, community organizations, students and parents to understand the world of young people and develop effective ways of supporting students and families. The anonymous and optional survey has been given every three years, since 1989, to students in grades 5, 8, 9 and 11.

Chair Larkin shared that is a high school choir concert, 7 p.m., Monday, March 6, at the Performing Arts Center.
