    Dec. 6, 2016 Business Meeting

    Acknowledgement of Contributions

    Chair John Larkin announced, and the School Board approved, a resolution for accepting current contributions in the amount of $12,590. The total fiscal year 2016-2017 monetary contributions to date is $21,760.35.


    Reports from Members of the BoardRobot 7281 team

    Chair John Larkin participated in the Nov. 22, 2016 Business Meeting, the Dec. 6 School Board Chair meeting and the Dec. 6 Subcommittee on Policy. He also attended an Association of Metropolitan School Districts (AMSD) meeting and the Robotics competition hosted by Columbia Academy.

    Vice Chair Laura Palmer participated in the Nov. 22 Business Meeting, the Dec. 6 School Board Chair Meeting and the Dec. 6 Subcommittee on Policy. Ms. Palmer also attended the Tenured Teacher reception.

    Treasurer Molly Lewis was not present.

    Clerk Ted Landwehr participated in the Nov. 22 Business Meeting and will be attending a TIES conference this week.

    Director Naty Severson participated in the Nov. 22 Business Meeting, the Dec. 6 School Board Chair Meeting and the Dec. 6 Subcommittee on Policy meeting. She attended the regional Robotics competition at Columbia Academy and several school basketball games. She also met with Superintendent Kathy Kelly.

    Director Hala Asamarai participated in the Nov. 22 Business Meeting, spoke at a Kiwanis Club meeting and met with the CEO of Medtronic.


    Superintendent's Report
    Annie Jr. Superintendent Kelly attended an AMSD meeting followed by an Integration Superintendent's Meeting. The Superintendent and Director of Teaching and Learning Zena Stenvik met with St. Anthony New Brighton leadership on potential educational partnerships. Superintendent Kelly also participated in a planning meeting for the 2017 New York Educational Seminar for Columbia Heights High School. The Superintendent attended the Robotics regional competition at Columbia Academy, met with Board Director Severson and had multiple discussions with School Board directors. Lastly, she announced the Columbia Academy Theater Program is presenting Annie Jr., 7 p.m., Dec 15, 16 and 17 at the Columbia Heights High School Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $3 per person or $10 maximum per family.

    Strategic Directions A and B

    AP Small District of the Year award Each year, aligned to the District Mission and the Strategic Roadmap, directors report out on the status of their respective Strategic Directions. Director Stenvik and Director of Technology and Security Services Bryan Hennekens provided their annual update on Strategic Direction A: Expand access and opportunities by turbo charging what works and redesigning what needs to be better and Strategic Direction B: Innovate to close the achievement gap with accountability and efficiency.     Annual Budget (Truth in Taxation) Hearing

    Director of Finance and Operations Bill Holmgren facilitated the annual hearing. By law, the School Board must inform the public of the district’s revenue, expenditures, fund balances and other relevant budget information.     The School Board approved the Pay Levy for 2017 as discussed at the Nov. 22, 2016 Business Meeting.

    Board Topics

    Ted Landwehr and John Larkin School Board Recognition

    The School Board and Superintendent Kelly recognized Ted Landwehr at his final meeting as a School Board Director. Mr. Landwehr served three terms (1996, 2008 and 2012) on the Columbia Heights School Board. During his 12 years on the Columbia Heights School Board Mr. Landwehr served as a Director, Vice Chair, Clerk and Treasurer. On behalf of the School Board, Chair Larkin presented Mr. Landwehr with a farewell gift.
