    Oct. 11, 2016 Business Meeting

    Bill Holmgren and John Larkin Hylander Highlights

    The School Board recognized the Finance Department for receiving its ninth consecutive Association of School Business Officials International Award. Chair John Larkin presented a plaque to Director of Finance and Operations Bill Holmgren. For more information about the award, please read the news release.


    Reports from Members of the Board

    Chair John Larkin participated in the Sept. 27, 2016 Business Meeting and the Oct. 11, 2016 Chair Meeting. Chair Larkin spoke at the Pfc. James D. LaBelle Memorial Dedication in which Medal of Honor Recipients Hal Fritz and Tom Kelley, along with U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar, participated. He also attended the City of Columbia Heights LaBelle Park rededication. Chair Larkin also assisted with the Columbia Heights High School (CHHS) student annual bonfire, attended the Homecoming football game and a Girls' volleyball game. He also had multiple conversations with constituents.

    Vice Chair Laura Palmer participated in the Sept. 27, 2016 Business Meeting and the Oct. 11 Board Chair meeting. She also attended the Pfc. James D. LaBelle Memorial Dedication, the City of Columbia Heights LaBelle Park rededication and the Homecoming football game.

    Treasurer Molly Lewis participated in the Sept. 27, 2016 Business Meeting, attended the Pfc. James D. LaBelle Memorial Dedication and the fourth-grade Medal of Honor event at Highland Elementary School. She attended a Special Education Advisory Committee meeting. Ms. Lewis also attended the CHHS Pep Fest, the Homecoming football game, seventh- and eighth-grade football games and a Strikers' adaptive soccer game.

    Clerk Ted Landwehr participated in the Sept. 27, 2016 Business Meeting, attended the Pfc. James D. LaBelle Memorial Dedication, met with constituents and noted he has seen "Home of a Hylander" yard signs throughout the community.

    Director Naty Severson participated in the Sept. 27, 2016 Business Meeting, attended the Homecoming and junior varsity football games, a Girl's volleyball game and met with and took calls from constituents. 

    Director Hala Asamarai participated in the Sept. 27, 2016 Business Meeting, a Valley View Elementary School PTO meeting and met with and took calls from constituents.


    Superintendent's Report

    Highland students Superintendent Kathy Kelly met with the Superintendent of St. Anthony/New Brighton Public Schools to discuss collaborative projects. She and Director of Teaching and Learning Zena Stenvik, who is interning for her superintendent's license, met with Univeristy of Minnesota staff. She reported that Director of Student Services Nicole Halabi and English Language and Family Engagement Coordinator Jane Riordan and she attended an American Indian Education dinner. Superintendent Kelly thanked everyone who participated in the Pfc. James D. LaBelle memorial dedication (pictured at right with Medal of Honor Recipient Thomas Kelley), the Medal of Honor curriculum unveiling at Highland Elementary School (picture left), the Student program at CHHS (Medal of Honor Recipient Hal Fritz pictured below) and the reception. Superintendent Kelly attended the City of Columbia Heights LaBelle Park rededication, participated in the Sept. 27, 2016 Business Meeting and Oct. 11 Chair Meeting, attended the Homecoming football game and had multiple conversations with members of the School Board. Superintendent Kelly also announced that 17 current and recently graduated CHHS students have been named to the 2016 AP Scholar List, thanked the Fridley Columbia Heights Rotary Club for donating free dictionaries to District third-grade students and reminded the public of the Tuesday, Oct. 18, School Board Candidate Forum.

    Placement Center Report/Ethnicity Report:

    Director of Student Services Nicole Halabi provided an update on the Placement Center for the 2015-2016 School year, including ethnicity demographic trends. View Director Halabi's Placement Center presentation.

    Family Engagement

    Director Halabi and English Learner and Family Engagement Coordinator Jane Riordan gave an overview of activities at the District and school levels for the current school year. View their Family Engagement presentation.

    Valley View family Valley View Elementary School Vision Card

    Principal Willie Fort presented the annual Valley View Elementary School Strategic Roadmap update. Principal Fort addressed the following:

    Equalization Factor Resolution

    The School Board approved supporting a resolution that says Columbia Heights Public Schools is supportive of Equalization Funding and Tax Fairness. The intent behind the resolution this is to help bring additional equitable revenue to CHPS through the Legislature without negatively impacting the tax impact of District homeowners. 

    Annual Report on Worlds Best Workforce Annual Report

    The School Board approved the 2016 Annual Report on World's Best Workforce. The Teaching and Learning Department collaborated with the Communications Department on the content and branding of this document. The mandatory pieces on curriculum and instruction are in the report with links on the District Website for assessment data. The World's Best Workforce Annual Report will be mailed to the community in the coming weeks. View the Annual Report.
