    Sept. 27, 2016

    Casey Mahon & John Larkin Hylander Highlights

    The School Board recognized the Communications Department (Director Casey Mahon and Communications Specialist Lauryn Grimes) for earning three communication awards from the National School Public Relations Association. The department earned an Award of Merit for The Heights’ eNews! Only 10 districts nationwide were selected for employee newsletters. The College and Career Guides were selected for an Award of Merit; Columbia Heights Public Schools is one of only two districts in Minnesota to receive this award. The School Board Report (this newsletter) received an Honorable Mention. Columbia Heights is the only District to be recognized by NSPRA for reporting to the public on its School Board.


    Communications to the Board

    A citizen addressed the School Board regarding the availability of the high school swimming pool for community recreational purposes. The request will be forwarded to staff for a follow-up response.


    Acknowledgement of Contributions

    Chair John Larkin announced, and the School Board approved, a resolution for accepting current contributions in the amount of $4,893.47.


    Reports from Members of the Board

    Chair John Larkin participated in the Sept. 20, 2016 Work Session, the Sept. 20 Listening Session, the Sept. 27 School Board Orientation and led the Sept. 27 School Board Chair meeting. Chair Larkin also participated in a Medal of Honor planning meeting and attended
    the 9th grade orientation, a varsity football game a Strikers adaptive soccer game.

    Vice Chair Laura Palmer participated in the Sept. 20, 2016 Work Session, the Sept. 27 Board Chair Meeting and a Metro NE 916 Board Meeting.

    Treasurer Molly Lewis participated in the Sept. 20, 2016 Work Session, the Highland Elementary School picnic, attended Strikers' adaptive soccer games and 7th grade and varsity football games.

    Clerk Ted Landwehr participated in the Sept. 20, 2016 Work Session and met with constituents.

    Director Naty Severson participated in the Sept. 20, 2016 Work Session, met with constituents and attended varsity and junior varsity football games and the 9th grade parent night.

    Director Hala Asamarai participated in the Sept. 20, 2016 Work Session and met with constituents.


    Superintendent's Report 

    Superintendent Kathy Kelly participated in the Sept. 20 Work Session, the Sept. 27 School Board Chair meeting and the Sept. 27 School Board Candidate Orientation. She reported planning for the 2017 study session to New York City for Concert Choir and AP Art students is in progress, that she and Director of Teaching and Learning Zena Stenvik participated in a Close-Up program meeting and also a law conference. Superintendent Kelly reported that work continues on the Medal of Honor event and curriculum. She announced Education Minnesota Local 710 is hosting a School Board Candidate Forum, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2016 at the Community Room. Superintendent Kelly also had discussions with School Board Directors.

    Lindsay Bennett Strategic Direction D: Acknowledge and address tensions and opportunities for employments and partnerships between employees
    Director of Human Resources Lindsey Bennett's (pictured) presentation included the different methods included in the annual tracking of the Strategic Roadmap Direction as well as the overall score. View the HR Strategic Roadmap presentation presentation.

    ACES Training
    Director of Student Services Nicole Halabi (pictured) and Educational Support Coordinator Marsha Walker presented on the Adverse Nicole Halabi Childhood Experiences (ACES) training for the 2016-2017 school year. The presentation included a definition of ACES, a discussion of an upcoming film, a collaborative grant and staff development. View the ACES training presentation

    Secondary Day Treatment
    Director Halabi presented on information regarding the secondary day treatment this District will begin offering in 2017. The presentation included the goal, rationale, criteria, transitioning and existing, schedule, logistics, capacity, oversight, staffing, curriculum and family engagement. View the Secondary Day Treatment presentation. 

    Curriculum Cycle and UpdateZena Stenvik
    Director of Teaching and Learning Stenvik (pictured) presented on the current implementation of the seven year curriculum review cycle. The updated reflects the most recent information from the state regarding revision of standards in key content areas. View the Curriculum Review presentation.

    Equalization FactorBill Holmgren
    Director of Finance and Operations Bill Holmgren (pictured) provided the School Board information on a possible resolution for equalization funding and tax fairness. View the Equalization Factor presentation.
