      Hylander Highlights


    The School Board honored the Strikers Adaptive Soccer Team, which finished in sixth-place at the 2015 State Tournament. The adaptive co-ed soccer team, made up of players from Columbia Heights and St. Anthony, made its first trip (in its four-year existence) to the state tournament.  Goalie Tyler Krawczynski was named to the All-Tournament Team. Pictured right are players and coaches who were able to attend the Jan. 12 Business Meeting.

      Discussion, Reports, Information Items


    • Chair John Larkin participated in the Jan. 5, 2016 Columbia Heights Public Schools (CHPS) School Board Organizational Meeting, attended a TIES two-day conference, an Association of Metropolitan School Districts (AMSD) Board of Director's meeting, the Robotics competition at Columbia Academy (photos below right) and had conversations with Vice Chair Laura Palmer, Treasurer Molly Lewis and Superintendent Kathy Kelly.  Mr. Larkin will also attend the Minnesota School Board Association (MSBA) annual conference in Minneapolis.
    • Vice Chair Laura Palmer participated in the Jan. 5, 2016 Organizational Meeting and met with Director of Student Services Nicole Halabi.  Ms. Palmer also attended a meeting at Intermediate School District 287 on student behavior issues.

    • Treasurer Molly Lewis participated in the Jan. 5, 2016 Organizational Meeting, met with Chair Larkin, Clerk Landwehr and Superintendent Kelly and attended a Rise-Up breakfast at Columbia Academy.

    • Clerk Ted Landwehr participated in the Jan. 5, 2016 Organizational Meeting, attended the Valley View PTO meeting, met with Vice Chair Palmer and Treasurer Lewis, attended a Chamber meeting and will attend the annual MSBA conference.

    • Superintendent Kathy Kelly participated in the Jan. 5, 2016 Organizational Meeting, shared that the E-12 Admin Team met again to discuss the American Indian Education program and attended AMSD Board of Director's and West Metro Education Program Superintendent Advisory Committee meetings.  She reported that Director of Finance and Operations Bill Holmgren, Director of Human Resources Lindsey Bennett and she met on 2016-2017 budget assumptions and staffing.  Superintendent Kelly also had meetings with members of the School Board and shared that she will attend the MSBA conference.
    Fire Alarm System bids
    Director of Finance and Operations Bill Holmgren briefed that three bids were received for the replacement of the fire alarm system at Columbia Heights High School, the District Center and the Family Center.  Director Holmgren said the lowest bid was $166,190.00 or $74,085 less than the second bid and $83,760 less than the third bid.
    This project is funded with Health and Safety dollars and is included in this year’s levy and budget. Director Holmgren recommended the School Board award the contract to the lowest bidder, ECSI, as an action item at the Jan. 19, 2016 Business Meeting. 

    American Indian Education Resolution
    Director of Student Services Nicole Halabi presented the School Board with information on the American Indian Education Resolution in accordance with Minn Stat 124D.78. She shared that the District's American Indian Parent Committee agrees that Columbia Heights Public Schools' programs meet the needs of American Indians students.  Director Halabi requested this resolution be acted on by the School Board as an action item at the Jan. 19, 2016 Business Meeting.

    Math Curriculum recommendations
    Inter
    im Director of Teaching and Learning Zena Stenvik and Curriculum Coordinator Tara Thukral discussed the seven-year curriculum review cycle, including professional development and budget, in the area of elementary math. Their recommendation to the School Board, to be put forward as an action item at the Jan. 19, 2016 Business Meeting, is to adapt the Math in Focus K-5 curriculum, beginning Fall 2016.       Action Items


    Discontinuance of Programs and Positions resolution
    The
    School Board approved a resolution directing the Superintendent and administration to discontinue programs and positions and curtail programs or positions to "effectuate economies and efficiencies in the School District and reduce expenditures as necessary" for the 2016-2017 school year.  This request was initially presented at the Dec. 8, 2015 Business Meeting.

    Pay Equity Report
    The School Board approved the request, which Director of Human Resources Lindsey Bennett briefed at the Dec. 8, 2015 Business Meeting.  Director Bennett noted that public institutions are required to report salary information on employees to assure that these institutions are not discriminating against female employees in compensation practices. She said that to be in compliance with the State of Minnesota Local Government Pay Equity Act the following tests must be administered:

    • Completeness and Accuracy
    • Statistical Analysis
    • Salary Range
    • Exceptional Service Pay
    Director Bennett reported that CHPS is in compliance with the Completeness and Accuracy and Statistical Analysis tests while continuing to work on the Salary Range and Exceptional Pay tests.   Click here for Director Bennett's PowerPoint presentation.
