    • Chair John Larkin attended a Minnesota School Boards Association (MSBA) conference, had meetings with Superintendent Kathy Kelly and met with several members of the School Board.
    • Vice-Chair Ted Landwehr attended a West Metro Education Program Executive Committee meeting.

    • Treasurer Molly Lewis had no report.

    • Director Laura Palmer participated in a NE Metro Intermediate District 916 Board meeting.

    • Director Grant Nichols met with Superintendent Kelly and several members of the School Board.
      Superintendent Kathy Kelly's Report


    • Attended a joint meeting with representatives from the Fridley School District to discuss transportation and integration issues.

    • Conferred with representatives from Anoka County, the State of Minnesota, MSBA and the Columbia Heights Public Schools' Attorney regarding the legal process for filling a School Board vacancy.

    • Enjoyed the Columbia Heights Fine Arts Foundation play, "12 Angry Jurors."

    • Reported that negotiations with Local 710 continue.

    • Attended the Columbia Heights/Fridley Rotary STRIVE scholarship dinner along with Director of Communications Casey Mahon, Director of Community Education Kristen Stuenkel and Columbia Heights High School Principal Dan Wrobleski (all Rotary members).

    • Participated with the Castle Heights site design team on the next steps (see Castle Heights Site Update presentation).

    • Attended the MSBA conference with Board Chair Larkin.

    • Participated in a School Board Chair meeting with Chair Larkin and Vice Chair Landwehr.
    Curriculum cycle and update: Interim Director of Teaching and Learning Zena Stenvik (right) and Curriculum Coordinator Tara Thukral (second right) presented to the School Board the current status of the implementation of the seven-year curriculum review cycle.     Start of the school year activities: Interim Director Stenvik reported on activities for staff and teachers in preparation for the 2015-2016 school year.  Click here for the PowerPoint presentation.
     
    Long-term facilities maintenance revenue: Director of Finance and Operations Bill Holmgren (right) reported that the state Legislature passed new long-term facilities maintenance revenue. Director Holmgren said this District will receive additional funding, but it will be several years before it is received and it is to be used for specific approved maintenance projects.     Workers install the first of two multi-age playgrounds Aug. 11, 2015.  The new playgrounds will be completed by the beginning of the new school year.  Plans are to keep the former Castle Heights' tower (pictured in background).
    Castle Heights site update: Superintendent Kelly introduced Mariah Levison, a facilitator from the Minnesota State Office for Collaboration, who provided a summary of the July 20, 2015 Community Conversation and suggested next steps for the site. Director Holmgren also shared feedback submitted from the public via an online survey campaign and Superintendent Kelly's meeting with high school students (click here to read the feedback received).  Next steps include generating more feedback from students upon their return for the 2015-2016 school year.  Click here for Ms. Levison's PowerPoint presentation.     Homeless Transportation quote:
    The School Board approved a two-year contract with Twin City Transportation (TCT), which had the lowest quote of the four received by the District.  

    Resolution for Special Election: The School Board approved a resolution for a Special Election to fill the vacancy created with the resignation of former Director Lori Meyer. The Primary Election will be Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2015 with a Special Election scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2015. See the timeline of key dates at right. 

    Resolution to combine precincts for Special Election
    : The School Board approved a resolution to combine the current total of 13 precincts for the School Board Special Election to two (Highland and Valley View elementary schools), to reduce the cost of the election.

    School Board out-of-state travel:
    The School Board approved out-of-state travel for School Board members to attend the April 2016 National School Board Association Annual Conference in Boston, MA.


    Election of School Board Clerk:
    The School Board elected Director Laura Palmer to fill the position of School Board Clerk.

    Superintendent Kelly reported she will be the superintendent representative on the WEMP Joint Powers Board starting in September.
