    Discussion, Reports and Information Items

    Report highlights from the School Board acting on behalf of Columbia Heights Public Schools:

    • Chair Scott Bardell participated in the Sept. 30 Special Called Meeting with representatives from the City of Columbia Heights, the Oct. 14 Sub-Committee on Board Policy meeting and an Association of Metropolitan School Districts meeting. He also attended the Columbia Heights High School (CHHS) Hall of Fame induction of Tom Palkowski, Class of 1983 and Ellis "Wojo" Wojciehowski, Class of 1984 (pictured below right) and the Homecoming game and fireworks.

    • Vice Chair John Larkin participated in the Sept. 30 Special Called meeting, an Oct. 9 Columbia Heights Public Schools' (CHPS) School Board Candidate Forum, and a Minnesota State High School League quarterly meeting. He also attended Columbia Academy and CHHS parent conferences, the Oct. 14 Community Levy Forum at North Park Elementary School and the CHHS Homecoming football game.
    • Clerk Missy Lee participated in the Sept. 30 Special Called Meeting and attended the CHHS Hall of Fame induction and the Homecoming football game.  She also reported on a conversation she had with CHHS Senior Luis Carchi who attended the Princeton University Leadership Enterprise for a Diverse America program.

    • Treasurer Lori Meyer participated in the Sept. 30 Special Called Meeting and had conversations with constituents about the two district levy questions.

    • Director Ted Landwehr participated in the Sept. 30 Special Called Meeting, the Oct. 14 Policy Subcommittee meeting, the Homecoming football game with fireworks (pictures below), West Metro Education Program (WMEP) board meetings and watched an Oct. 9 School Board Candidate Forum.

  • Superintendent's Report

    • Attended the Minnesota Business Partnership dinner that recognized Valley View Elementary School with the 2014 Minnesota's Future Award (watch videos). Superintendent Kelly pointed out that Valley View Principal Willie Fort, on behalf of his school, was given a standing ovation by Governor Mark Dayton, U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar and more than 1,000 business leaders.
    • Attended a Post-Secondary Early Success (PSES) meeting with area superintendents and the Anoka Ramsey Community College president that resulted in a (PSES) agreement, which will be brought to the School Board at a later date.
    • Had a discussion with Local 710 President Carl Lightbody.
    • Attended the CHHS Academic Lettering Night and congratulated all the students. She also thanked the CHHS staff and parents.
    • Attended AMSD Executive Committee and Board of Directors meetings that focused on college and career-ready issues.
    • Shared the Administrative team, facilitated by Director of Teaching and Learning, Duane Berkas, met at a quarterly meeting to discuss data as it relates to closing the achievement gap.
    • Participated in a tabletop crisis management exercise facilitated by District Research and Development Coordinator Rick Hamann.

    • Presented, with Director of Finance and Operations Bill Holmgren and Director of Technology and Security Services Bryan Hennekens, at the Sept. 30 joint meeting with the City of Columbia Heights.

    • Attended a Northeast Metro Intermediate District 916 Superintendent's meeting on weather related issues and District Management Council initiatives.

    • Attended the CHHS Pep Fest, the Hall of Fame induction ceremony and the Homecoming football game with fireworks (right).

    • Went to a girls' swim meet and applauded the sportsmanship of all involved.

    • Participated in an ACHIEVE meeting with Director Nicole Halabi.

    • Participated in a WMEP Superintendent's meeting.

    • Attended a Tri-Metro Governance Board meeting; this is the second year of the conference and reported that sportsmanship conduct and parent involvement is very positive.

    • Had a quarterly meeting focusing on collaboration issues with Columbia Heights Police Chief Scott Nadeau.

    • Attended the Community Levy Forum at North Park Elementary School.

    Personalized Learning Initiative - PLI (Columbia Academy): Director Bryan Hennekens and Personalized Learning Initiative Facilitator Amy Oelschlager presented an update on the Columbia Academy Personalized Learning Initiative. Their report informed the School Board of PLI adjustments that were made from the last school year, the current phase of the PLI and what to expect going forward. Click here for the PowerPoint.

    Employee Handbook: Director of Human Resources Lindsey Bennett provided information on the 2014 Columbia Heights Public Schools' Employee Handbook.

    Building Vision Card (Valley View Elementary School): Director Berkas and Valley View Elementary School Principal Fort presented an update on the Strategic Roadmap Vision Card for Valley View Elementary School. Click here for the PowerPoint.


    Action Items:

    Assurance of Compliance with State and Federal Law Prohibiting Discrimination: The School Board approved the request as presented by Director Halabi.

    Annual Report on Staff Development: The School Board approved the report per Director Berkas' request.

    Minnesota State High School League Resolution: The School Board approved the annual request per Activities and Athletics Director Matt Miller.

    Repeal of Policy 426 (Identification Badges): The School Board repealed the policy as it is no longer necessary. 

    School Board Policies (Second Reading): These policies appeared on the September 23 meeting for the first reading.  Approval was given at this meeting.
