    Report highlights from the School Board acting on behalf of Columbia Heights Public Schools

    • Vice-Chair Ted Landwehr participated in the School Board Organizational and West Metro Education Program meetings and attended a chamber meeting.

    • Clerk Lori Meyer attended the School Board Organizational Meeting and an Association of Metropolitan School District (AMSD) Legislative Preview meeting.

    • Treasurer Molly Lewis participated in the School Board Organizational Meeting, attended Minnesota School Board Association (MSBA) Phase I training, a Highland Elementary School all-school meeting, the Columbia Academy orientation and school basketball games.
    • Director Laura Palmer participated in the School Board Organizational meeting and attended a Northeast Metro Intermediate District 916 Board meeting.

    • Director Grant Nichols participated in the School Board Organizational Meeting, attended the Valley View Elementary School PTO meeting, MSBA School Board Phase I training and a City of Columbia Heights' Council Meeting.

    Superintendent's Report: 

    • Shared an update on the upcoming Columbia Heights High School visual and performing arts' student trip to New York City as approved June 24, 2014 by the School Board.

    • Attended the Tri-Metro Governance Board meeting.

    • Reported, by law, the second round of teacher evaluations for probationary status has been completed.
    • Participated in the AMSD Legislative Preview with School Board Director Meyer, Director of Finance and Operations Bill Holmgren, Senator Barbara Goodwin (District 41) and Representatives Carolyn Laine (District 41B) and Connie Bernardy (District 41A).

    • Noted Director of Finance and Operations Holmgren, Director of Technology and Security Bryan Hennekens and she continue to meet weekly on how the referenda funds approved by voters Nov. 4, 2014 will be invested.  They are working on a five- and 10-year plan, which will be presented to the School Board at an upcoming meeting.

    • Reported that the Academic Return on Investment team continues to meet with a focus this year on AVID.

    • Shared she met with Board Chair Larkin and had conversations and communications with School Board directors.

    Discussion, Reports and Information Items

    West Metro Education Program (WMEP) Superintendent Kelly and Director of Finance and Operations Bill Holmgren briefed the School Board with updated information on WMEP.  This item can best be understood by watching the presentation (click here and scroll to the 24.30 minute/second mark of the video); the topic was also discussed at the Dec. 9, 2014 School Board meeting (click here).  To view the PowerPoint presentation, click here.


    Action Items  

    Police Liaison Contract: The School Board approved the Police Liaison contract, previously discussed at the Dec. 9, 2014 School Board meeting. Director Holmgren shared this program is based on a Joint Powers Agreement between the City of Columbia Heights and ISD #13 Columbia Heights Public Schools. The agreement language remains the same as in previous years with the total cost reflecting a minimal increase. This agreement is for services at Columbia Academy and Columbia Heights High School from Jan. 1, 2015 through Dec. 31, 2015.
