    Acknowledgement of Contributions

    Chair John Larkin announced, and the School Board approved, a resolution for accepting current contributions in the amount of $5,342.29. The total fiscal year 2014-2015 monetary contributions to date is $46,488.42.

    Discussion, Reports, Information Items

    Report highlights from the School Board acting on behalf of Columbia Heights Public Schools:
    • Chair John Larkin participated in the Feb. 17, 2015 Listening and Work Sessions and attended a high school musical concert.  He also had a meeting with Vice Chair Ted Landwehr and Superintendent Kathy Kelly.

    • Vice-Chair Ted Landwehr participated in the Feb. 17, 2015 Work Session, a West Metro Education Program (WMEP) Joint Powers Board Meeting and a meeting with School Board Chair Larkin and Superintendent Kelly.  He also attended a North Park Elementary School PTO meeting.

    • Clerk Lori Meyer participated in the Feb. 17, 2015 Work Session.
    • Treasurer Molly Lewis participated in the Feb. 17, 2015 Work Session

    • Director Laura Palmer participated in the Feb. 17, 2015 Work Session and had a meeting with Chair Larkin.
    • Director Grant Nichols participated in the Feb. 17, 2015 Work Session.  He also attended a Family Fun Night at Valley View Elementary School and an African-Heritage Month play at North Park Elementary School.
    Superintendent Kathy Kelly's Report

    • Participated with the Directors the Quarterly Non-Licensed Labor Management Team Meeting.

    • Reported Director of Finance and Operations Bill Holmgren and she participated in a WMEP Joint Powers Board meeting in which the conveyance of two WMEP schools to Minneapolis and Robbinsdale school districts were approved.

    • Shared the Pre-K12 committee on efficiencies and economies continues to meet to include the staffing process is underway.
    • Joined with Director of Teaching and Learning Duane Berkas in a meeting with a Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) compliance monitor on the continuous improvement process of Columbia Academy.

    • Shared Directors Berkas and Holmgren had multiple meetings on integration and achievement planning and potential collaboration.

    • Reported on the upcoming high school study seminar trip to New York City.  She thanked everyone who is supporting the trip.  Directors Berkas, Holmgren and she will accompany the trip as chaperones. 

    • Noted that the Academic Return on Investment team continues to meet. This month the focus is on AVID and the current phase is on student financial and data collection.

    • Thanked School Board directors for their various communications with her.

    • Participated in the Feb. 17, 2015 Work Session.
    Columbia Heights Police Department (CHPD): Columbia Heights Police Chief Scott Nadeau and Police Sergeant Erik Johnston provided a presentation that focused on the new body-worn mobile video recorders (see photo at right) that all CHPD officers, including the two Columbia Heights Public Schools' and School Resource Officers (SROs), will now wear. Superintendent Kelly noted the CHPD was recently and positively covered in a feature article (The Simple Strategies That Could Fundamentally Change How Communities View Their Police) in the international Huffington Post publication.     Achievement and Integration Report: Director Berkas provided an update on the three-year District Achievement and Integration Plan. He said the Achievement Gap is "arguably the most significant education challenge facing Columbia Heights Public Schools, the state of Minnesota and our country."  Director Berkas added Achievement and Integration funding supports key academic programs, including AVID, college and career-readiness support programs and personnel, parent engagement positions and programs and magnet programming that attracts students to Columbia Heights Public Schools.     2015-2016 School Calendar:  Director of Student Services Nicole Halabi provided an overview of the 2015-2016 Columbia Heights Public Schools' school year calendar.  This agenda item will be brought forward as an Action Item at the next School Board Business Meeting.  After School Board approval, the 2015-2016 school calendar will be officially made public.

    Action Items

    Indian Education Resolution
    : In accordance with Minnesota Statute §124D.78, the School Board approved the American Indian Education committee affirming that the committee does concur and that the District’s programs meet American Indian student needs.

    Revised Budget: Director Holmgren provided an update and requested School Board approval on the revised 2014-2015 Budget. The School Board approved the revision.  Click here for the PowerPoint.
